The UN nuclear watchdog holds an extraordinary session on Iran, urging restraint to avoid nuclear safety risks following recent military strikes.
VIENNA: Delegates at the United Nations’ nuclear agency began an extraordinary session on Iran on Monday following recent US-Israeli military strikes against the Islamic republic.
The International Atomic Energy Agency’s board of governors convened the special meeting in Vienna after requests from both Iran and its key ally, Russia.
This extraordinary session precedes a regularly scheduled meeting of the IAEA’s 35-country governing board.
The agency, which monitors Iran’s nuclear programme, stated on Saturday that it was “closely monitoring developments in the Middle East, and urges restraint to avoid any nuclear safety risks to people in the region”.
