Sweden condemns the execution of a Swedish national in Iran, denouncing the trial as unlawful and failing to meet rule of law standards.
STOCKHOLM: Sweden’s foreign minister has confirmed with dismay that Iran executed a Swedish citizen earlier today.
Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stated that Sweden had repeatedly raised the case at various levels with Iranian representatives since the man’s arrest in June 2025.
She emphasised that Sweden had consistently conveyed its expectation for a fair trial and for the death penalty not to be imposed.
Stenergard declared it obvious that the legal process leading to the execution was not conducted in accordance with the rule of law.
Iran’s judiciary website, Mizan Online, earlier announced the execution of a man named Kouroush Keyvani for spying for Israel.
It reported that Keyvani was arrested during Iran’s 12-day war with Israel in June last year.
The website listed details of his alleged meetings with agents from Israel’s Mossad spy agency.
It further claimed he received training in six European countries and in Tel Aviv.
This marks the first public announcement of such an execution since Israel and the United States launched strikes on Iran on February 28.
Those strikes killed Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggered a wider regional conflict.
The Swedish foreign minister did not publicly identify the executed citizen.
