The Israeli military says it detected a missile fired from Yemen, marking the first such launch since the Gaza war began and raising regional escalation fears.
TEL AVIV: The Israeli military said early on Saturday it had identified a missile launch originating from Yemen.
This marks the first time a missile has been launched from Yemen since the war in Gaza erupted.
The launch came hours after the Iran-aligned Houthi group stated it was prepared to act if what it called an escalation against Iran and the “axis of resistance” continued.
The group did not specify what form any intervention would take.
The Houthis’ entry into the conflict raises the prospect of a broader regional confrontation.
This is particularly significant given the group’s demonstrated ability to strike distant targets and disrupt vital shipping lanes around the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea.
The Houthis had previously launched such attacks in support of Hamas following the October 7, 2023 attacks.
Iran’s Shi’ite allies in Lebanon and Iraq have already joined the regional conflict, which was triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Tehran four weeks ago.
