Nestle warns the theft of a massive KitKat shipment could cause Easter shortages as thieves target the popular chocolate bar.
GENEVA: A massive shipment of KitKat chocolate bars weighing approximately 12 tonnes has been stolen in Europe.
The Swiss food giant Nestle confirmed the theft of a truck transporting 413,793 units of its new chocolate range during transit last week.
“We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat,” a brand spokesperson said, referencing its famous catchphrase.
“But it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate.”
The stolen truck was travelling from central Italy to Poland for distribution across several countries.
KitKat warned the heist may lead to shortages on shelves ahead of the Easter holiday period.
“Consumers, unfortunately, may struggle to find their favourite chocolates ahead of Easter,” the company stated.
The specific location where the vehicle and its contents disappeared remains undisclosed.
KitKat expressed concern that the stolen bars could enter unofficial sales channels across European markets.
The company said each bar carries a unique batch code that can be traced if scanned.
“If a match is found, the scanner will be given clear instructions on how to alert KitKat who will then share the evidence appropriately,” it explained.
Investigations into the theft are ongoing in collaboration with local authorities and supply chain partners.
