The fast-food giant has registered its brand in Russia, years after suspending operations and selling its local business.
MOSCOW: McDonald’s has registered its eponymous trademark in Russia, according to an analysis of the Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) database.
The company filed the application in December 2024, with Rospatent making the decision to register the trademark in 2026.
The registration allows the McDonald’s trademark to be used in Russia for the sale of food products, prepared meals, beverages, toys and tableware.
McDonald’s announced the suspension of its operations in Russia on March 14, 2022, citing emerging “operational, technical and logistical difficulties.”
Its Russian assets were subsequently acquired by the company’s licensee, Alexander Govor.
However, the seller retained the right to buy back the business at market terms within 15 years under the terms of the agreement.
The first restaurant under the new Russian brand, Vkusno i Tochka (Tasty and That’s it), opened in Moscow on June 12, 2022.
The McDonald’s company was founded in 1940 by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California.
It became the first in the world to formulate the principles of the “fast-food” concept in 1948.
As of June 30, the network comprised over 44,000 restaurants in 114 countries.
