Libyan PM Abdulhamid Dbeibah confirms successful heart treatment in Misrata, with subsequent checkups abroad, amid the country’s ongoing political division.
TRIPOLI: Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah has undergone successful treatment at a heart hospital. His office confirmed the procedure on Saturday but did not disclose the specific ailment.
The treatment was carried out at a facility in the northwestern city of Misrata. Dbeibah later travelled abroad for additional medical checkups, which he described as being for reassurance.
“I assure you that I am fine, by God’s grace,” said a statement posted on his social media overnight. He clarified that the overseas checkups were not the primary reason for his trip.
Italian media had reported he was admitted to a leading cardiac facility in Milan on Thursday. Dbeibah addressed these reports directly in his statement.
“The matter is simply that I underwent some additional medical checkups for reassurance while I was abroad due to a prior external commitment,” he said. “The results confirmed the success of the treatment I received in Libya, praise be to God.”
Dbeibah leads the UN-recognised government based in Tripoli, which controls western Libya. The country’s east is run by a rival administration backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar.
Libya has remained divided since the chaos that followed the 2011 Arab Spring uprising. That conflict toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.
