A gas leak triggered explosions and a fire at a Pennsylvania nursing home, killing two and injuring 20 as firefighters rescued trapped residents and staff.
PENNSYLVANIA: Two people were killed and 20 injured after explosions and a fire, believed to be sparked by a gas leak, ripped through a nursing home near Philadelphia.
The blasts at the Silver Lake Nursing Home in Bristol Township caused a major structural collapse, with part of the first floor falling into the basement.
Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito said numerous patients and staff were initially trapped inside the demolished portion of the building.
First responders arriving at the scene after 2:00 p.m. EST encountered victims trapped in debris, blocked stairwells, and stuck elevators.
Firefighters ventured into the collapsed basement zone to rescue at least two more people before retreating due to lingering gas fumes.
“Within approximately 15 to 30 seconds of us exiting the building, knowing there was a heavy odor of natural gas around us, there was another explosion and fire,” Dippolito said.
The front of the structure appeared blasted outward, though most of the facility remained standing with shattered windows.
All residents and staff have now been accounted for, according to Police Chief Charles Winik, who said people were feared missing for hours.
The nursing home is certified for up to 174 beds, with more than 50 patients typically inside at any time.
Governor Josh Shapiro praised the community response, stating, “This is the Pennsylvania way, neighbors helping neighbors in a moment of need.”
