UN building in Sudan’s Kordofan hit by strike, killing six

A strike on a UN facility in Sudan’s Kadugli killed at least six people, with the army-aligned government blaming the paramilitary RSF

PORT SUDAN: A strike on a United Nations facility in Sudan’s southern Kordofan region killed at least six people on Saturday.

A medical source at the city’s hospital confirmed the deaths to AFP.

“Six people were killed in a bombing of the UN headquarters while they were inside the building,” the source said.

Witnesses told AFP that the victims were UN employees.

Eyewitnesses reported that a drone had struck the UN building.

The Sudanese government, based in Port Sudan, condemned the attack in a statement.

It accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of being behind the strike.

The Sovereignty Council, headed by army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, called it a “dangerous escalation”.

The attack hit the besieged South Kordofan state capital of Kadugli.

The city has been under siege by the RSF for a year and a half.

Famine was declared there in early November.

Kordofan is a vast agricultural region split into three states.

It lies between RSF-controlled Darfur and army-held areas in the north, east and centre.

Its position is strategically important for maintaining supply lines and moving troops.

The RSF has been at war with the Sudanese military since April 2023.

It has deployed fighters, drones and allied militias to the fertile Kordofan region.

Analysts say the RSF seeks to punch through the army’s defences around central Sudan.

This would pave the way for recapturing the capital, Khartoum. – AFP
