AS we draw the curtain on 2023, all of us need to reflect on the year that was.
The questions that lead to resolutions are all too familiar.
What could I have done better for the family, in my job, for the country?
We try to be better with each passing year. That is the aim, that is what we would like and in a perfect world that is what is expected.
Hence, I urge all Malaysians to follow what is right, follow what your heart tells you. Do the right thing and change to be better.
Keep faith in your respective religions, believe in the good of others and above all practice moderation.
It would be folly of me to say that there will be provocative instances in our lives.
However, there is no need to take the aggressive or reactive path.
There is certainly no need to raise voices and, God forbid, our hands in everyday dealings and actions.
I know there are times when the ugly of society is too much.
We do not need to look far, just go on social media and every day we are bombarded with messages which carry so much hate, violence and a dire decline in morals.
This is not the Malaysia that was, it is not the Malaysia that is and it will certainly not be tomorrow’s Malaysia.
You and I have a responsibility towards each other to ensure it does not happen.
There will be situations where the spirit of harmony, peace and togetherness will be put to the test by selfish and irresponsible individuals who only seek to divide and disrupt.
Pay no attention and care to these quarters.
Let me remind everyone that the spirit of camaraderie is strong and alive within all Malaysians.
It is this very spirit that has taken us through thick and thin and will continue to serve as a guiding light as we navigate 2024 and beyond.
Please be reminded that the Rukun Negara has been declared since 1970. We have been reciting it.
Look towards the National Principles for inspiration, hope and a strengthened sense of unity.
Allow this symbol of nationhood to guide us to be better Malaysians.
I would like to wish all Malaysians near and far, season’s greetings and a Happy New Year.
