ONE Atomweight Kickboxing and Muay Thai World Champion Stamp Fairtex (pix) is prepared to take a big step in her quest of becoming a three-sport queen.
Her mission kicks off Friday, Jan 10 against India’s Puja “The Cyclone” Tomar at ONE: A New Tomorrow in Bangkok, Thailand.
“This is an important fight for me. Plus, this is an opportunity for me to improve as a mixed martial artist,” she said ahead of her bout in Bangkok’s Impact Arena.
“I love fighting in Thailand. My parents and family will come to watch, and I’ll have a big cheering section there for me.”
The Thai warrior has improved tremendously since her last bout but does not underestimate Tomar’s abilities when it comes to mixed martial arts.
Although the latter struggled to settle into life at ONE Championship last year, she brought an end to her barren run with a split decision victory against Indonesia’s Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol in January 2019.
That performance in Jakarta kept everyone on the edge of their seats, so Stamp knows that “The Cyclone” will not hold anything back when they meet.
“I never underestimate my opponents,” the ONE Atomweight Kickboxing and Muay Thai World Champion said.
“Puja is a wushu champion, so she’ll have good takedowns. She is unpredictable, and she keeps a fast pace and stays active.”
“My opponent knows stand-up is my strong point, and she is probably thinking about taking me down, so I’m working on both my submission and takedown defense.”
Aware of her opponent’s strengths, the lifelong martial artist has worked extra hard to keep her perfect streak in Bangkok with ONE.
As tough as it may seem, the “art of eight limbs” practitioner stresses that her game plan will be simple when they trade leather in the Thai capital.
“My plan is simple — keep the fight standing, use my Muay Thai, and defend takedowns. If I go to the ground, I’ll figure it out then and there. I’m confident in my ground game, and I know I am very strong.”
