Liverpool beat nine-man Tottenham but Isak injury mars victory

Liverpool won 2-1 at Tottenham with two red cards, but striker Alexander Isak limped off injured after scoring his third goal for the club.

LONDON: Liverpool secured a chaotic 2-1 Premier League victory over nine-man Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, but the win was marred by an injury to striker Alexander Isak.

Isak put Liverpool ahead in the second half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before limping off following a challenge from Micky van de Ven.

The goal was only Isak’s third in 16 games since his British record £125 million move from Newcastle United.

Tottenham played most of the match with 10 men after Xavi Simons was sent off in the first half for a foul on Virgil van Dijk.

Hugo Ekitike doubled Liverpool’s lead with his fifth goal in four games before Richarlison pulled one back for the hosts.

Tottenham’s Cristian Romero received a second yellow card in stoppage time to complete a miserable evening for the home side.

The result extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run to six games and moved them up to fifth in the table.

Manager Arne Slot will be concerned by Isak’s injury, especially with Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Salah had recently returned to the squad after being dropped following critical comments about the club.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank is under increasing pressure with his team 13th after one win in eight league games.

Simons’ red card came after a VAR review upgraded his initial yellow card for a challenge on Van Dijk.

Isak’s 56th-minute opener was created by Liverpool’s other big signings, with Florian Wirtz providing the assist.

Ekitike headed in Liverpool’s second goal from a Jeremie Frimpong cross in the 66th minute.

Richarlison gave Tottenham hope with a late goal after Van Dijk failed to clear a cross.
