Morocco midfielder Azzedine Ounahi will miss the rest of the Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a calf tear, coach Walid Regragui confirms
MOROCCO’S Africa Cup of Nations campaign has suffered a significant setback with the loss of key midfielder Azzedine Ounahi.
The 25-year-old playmaker will miss the remainder of the tournament after tearing his calf in training.
Coach Walid Regragui confirmed the injury after his team’s 1-0 last-16 victory over Tanzania on Sunday.
“He has a tear in his calf and can’t play at the AFCON. He is unavailable for five to six weeks,” Regragui said.
The Girona midfielder was in excellent form during the group stage but missed the knockout match.
He was seen arriving at the stadium in Rabat on crutches and wearing a medical boot.
Regragui explained the injury was a recurrence of a previous problem.
“He injured himself in training yesterday. It is an old injury that he had with Girona and the scar has opened up again.”
Bilal El Khannouss replaced Ounahi in midfield for the crucial match.
Morocco progressed to the quarter-finals with their narrow win over Tanzania.
