Penang FC head coach Wan Rohaimi promises a major squad overhaul following a 5-1 Super League defeat to Selangor FC at Bandaraya Stadium
GEORGE TOWN: Penang FC is set for a major squad shake-up following a crushing 5-1 defeat to Selangor FC in the Super League.
Head coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail expressed deep disappointment with his team’s lacklustre performance at Bandaraya Stadium last night.
He refused to offer excuses for the defeat, which was marred by numerous basic errors.
“Even though we were three goals down at halftime, the players still showed a desire to fight back,” Wan Rohaimi said.
The coach pinpointed a critical mistake in the second half that broke the team’s spirit.
He described a misplaced back pass to the goalkeeper that was intercepted by an opposing striker.
Wan Rohaimi acknowledged the frustration of fans who came to support the team.
“I am even more disappointed with what happened tonight, so I will take action – a major overhaul,” he stated.
He hopes players will learn from the defeat and avoid repeating mistakes.
Penang now faces a difficult situation near the bottom of the league table.
Meanwhile, Selangor FC head coach Christophe Gamel praised his players’ excellent performance.
He said they maintained focus despite the match being halted twice due to stadium lighting issues.
“We have travelled a lot, so it was a bit unsettling and tiring,” Gamel explained.
The coach said players were motivated enough to avoid silly mistakes during the disruptions.
Selangor’s comprehensive victory was their seventh win of the season.
The defeat marks Penang’s seventh loss this campaign.
The Harimau Kumbang squad remains rooted to the bottom with only five points from 10 matches.
Selangor FC now sits in fourth place in the Super League with 19 points. – Bernama
