Premier League clubs spend £400m in quiet January window

Premier League clubs spent around £400 million in the January transfer window, marking one of the highest winter totals despite a quiet deadline day.

PREMIER League clubs spent around £400 million in the January transfer window.

This adds to a record-breaking summer outlay that had already surpassed £3 billion for the season.

The winter total is slightly above last year’s £372 million.

It is surpassed only by the £430 million spent in 2018 and the record £815 million in 2023.

A pedestrian deadline day saw little late drama, with Crystal Palace’s reported £48 million signing of striker Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolverhampton Wanderers a rare highlight.

Many clubs had completed their business earlier in the window or sat out the action entirely.

Manchester City’s £62.5 million acquisition of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth on January 9 was another major deal that drove up the total.

City also signed Palace captain Marc Guehi for £20 million, making them and Palace the window’s biggest spenders.

Only four signings were reported to have cost over £30 million.

These included Tottenham’s £34.7 million signing of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and Palace’s £35 million purchase of Brennan Johnson from Spurs.

Guehi, Fulham’s Oscar Bobb, Taty Castellanos and Bournemouth’s Rayan were the only other arrivals costing over £20 million.

Aston Villa and Sunderland were the only other clubs to spend even £10 million on permanent transfers.

Everton, Leeds and Burnley’s only signings were loans.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle made no winter additions.

Liverpool had already given a £55 million kick-start to the summer window with a deal for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet.
