Malaysian hockey icon R. Ramakrishnan, a former national captain and Olympian, has passed away at the age of 72.

MALAYSIAN hockey legend R. Ramakrishnan has died at the age of 72.

The former national captain and Olympian passed away at a hospital in Damansara, believed to be due to a heart attack.

A relative stated that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Former national head coach Stephen Van Huizen paid tribute to his long-time friend, describing him as a humble and courteous gentleman.

“He was truly one of the better players,” said Van Huizen, who had known Ramakrishnan since 1972.

Ramakrishnan captained the national squad at the 1978 World Cup and competed in two Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976.

His illustrious career also included three World Cup editions, two Asian Games and four SEAP/SEA Games.

Van Huizen highlighted that Ramakrishnan was also an Asian All-Star and continued to contribute to hockey through coaching after his playing days.

“For me, it is truly a loss because he was a very good person, a gentleman, an excellent hockey player, very humble and always willing to help,” he added.
