Gauff admires Osaka’s bold Australian Open fashion but waits for own moment

Coco Gauff calls Naomi Osaka’s jellyfish-inspired outfit “insane” and “cool” but says she will make her own fashion statement only after winning a title.

COCO Gauff praised Naomi Osaka’s striking jellyfish-inspired Australian Open outfit on Friday but said she is not yet ready to make such a bold fashion statement herself.

The American third seed called the four-time Grand Slam champion’s ensemble “cool” and “insane” after reaching the last 16.

Osaka made global headlines with her grand entrance, holding a white parasol while wearing a matching wide-brimmed hat and gauzy veil.

She removed the accessories for her match but her turquoise and green kit continued the theme with tendrils hanging from the sleeves.

Gauff, a US Open and French Open champion, said Osaka’s status as a two-time former Australian Open winner allows her to pull off such an eye-catching move.

“We have had ideas in the past, but I feel like I have always wanted to do it if I won the tournament before,” said the 21-year-old.

“That was an insane arrival, and I thought it was really cool,” she added of Osaka’s entrance.

Gauff believes Osaka’s fashion choices are beneficial for tennis, stating they bring new eyes to the sport.

“I think what she’s doing for the sport and the fashion I think is cool and bringing new eyes to the sport,” Gauff said. – AFP
