The Youth and Sports Ministry is implementing a three-phase high-performance programme to prepare athletes for the 2027 SEA Games, focusing on selection, empowerment, and intensive training.
THE Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) will implement a three-phase high-performance preparation programme for national athletes starting this January.
The programme is designed to culminate at the 2027 SEA Games scheduled for September next year.
Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the first phase focuses on athlete selection and identification, alongside tailored training support.
The second phase emphasises empowerment and performance improvement through high-intensity training.
Athletes will then enter a third phase of intensive full-time training to ensure optimum readiness.
He outlined the plan in Parliament on Wednesday in response to a question from Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (PH-Tebrau).
Dr Mohammed Taufiq said last year’s SEA Games haul of 231 medals, exceeding the 200-medal target, provided a solid foundation for strategy.
Beyond physical training, KBS is placing significant emphasis on athletes’ mental well-being.
National athletes are equipped with a mental empowerment programme to ensure focus, discipline, and a high fighting spirit.
“In this regard, KBS has established a collaboration with the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) to ensure that these athletes fight hard to bring honour to the country,” he said.
Responding to a supplementary question on e-sports, Dr Mohammed Taufiq said Malaysia is seen as a new force in Southeast Asia.
He cited a report projecting Malaysia’s video game market revenue to reach USD 712 million in 2024, growing to USD 824 million by 2028.
KBS will continue to strengthen the Rakan Muda programme to develop youth potential through e-sports involvement.
