Upcycling lanyards

BY EE ANN NEE

The best time to sew is now. With the Movement Control Order, sewing has become one of my most enjoyable things to do at home. I have even been making my own face masks (instructions shared in the last column on Feb 21).

This is also a good time to make use of existing materials in our sewing projects, as fabric and sewing supplies stores are closed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Take a look at what you have at home, and use them creatively.

For example, lanyards are good materials to work with. They are ideal for many DIY projects, especially straps and slings. Since I have many lanyards from events and exhibitions, I decided to upcycle them! You’d be surprise at what you can turn your lanyards into!

Firstly, I removed the lanyards’ metal clips and swivel clasps. Then I stitched two one-side printed lanyards together to make the slings thicker, and to cover up any wording or brands on the lanyards. Choose lanyards of the same colour, same material and same width. And sew away!

Water bottle carrier

I love how my tumbler sling turned out. It is so useful and I can carry my water bottle with me easily. I made mine to fit my turquoise tumbler and a 600ml mineral water bottle.

Yoga mat slings

I even made my own yoga mat sling!

The black sling (on purple yoga mat) has elastic bands because I initially thought I should make it stretchable to easily fit my rolled-up yoga mat. However, I realised that I can’t carry it by the handle because the elastic bands will stretch with the weight from the mat.

So I made another one, just using lanyards. The dark blue sling (on green yoga mat) is better, because I can sling it on my shoulder. I just have to roll the mat smaller to fit them into the sling.
