Tourists always find Malaysia as a wonderful country to visit, no doubt thanks to our various cultures, beautiful landmarks and tantalising local dishes. But as a tourist, language barrier can be a problem at times in Malaysia, especially if the person they’re attempting to converse with does not speak English.
Recently, a tourist posted his experience in a Penang coffee shop where he encountered a waiter who kept insisting that he sat outside the restaurant despite his numerous attempts to order a cup of nutmeg juice.
In the 27 minute long video posted on YouTube on Sept 15, “Wild CARLOS appeared” or Carlos was searching for a place to have a meal while walking around Chulia Street.
He entered a coffee shop and noticed that the restaurant had a rule, those who didn’t order a drink would have to pay RM2 and that no outside drinks were allowed.
Comprehending the rule, Carolos opted for the nutmeg juice but unfortunately, the workers could not understand English.
He attempted to order the drink again with another female staff member but even she ignored him as well and pointed to another staff member to assist Carlos with his order.
His attempts were futile, so Carlos gave up and decided to tuck into his banh mi while waiting for another staff member to take his drink order.
It was then another waiter clad in a blue t-shirt approached him and asked what drink he had ordered, to which Carlos replied by saying he had tried ordering nutmeg juice three times.
Despite Carlos’s attempts at explanation, the waiter told him to sit outside of the shop. . As Carlos tried explaining to him, the waiter became a little aggressive and said that he “didn’t care”.
At that point, Carlos lost his patience and told the waiter that he was “really rude” before pointing out that he wanted nutmeg juice.
To make matters worse, he was told that the nutmeg juice was sold out, in which Carlos replied “Why didn’t you tell me? “ Instead you’re really rude!”
In the end, he settled for a glass of ampula juice and thankfully, the waiter apologised and returned Carlos’s change after he paid for the drink.
