THE Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) disbursed RM72 million in scholarships to more than 3,000 students from 16 educational institutions under Sunway Education Group.
The amount is the highest scholarship disbursement, since the inception of the scholarship program in 2011. The total amount awarded is RM402 million, to date.
The Women, Family and Community Development’s deputy minister Hannah Yeoh presented the scholarship to the students at “Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Scholarship and Award ceremony 2018” at Sunway College, today.
Yeoh commended JCF’s founding trustee Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah’s effort to make quality education accessible and affordable.
“I hope that you (students) will learn not just the skills that are important to your future but also the values that will help shape your character,“ said Yeoh to the recipients.
Sunway Group founder and chairman Cheah said: “It is my goal to disburse more than RM1 billion in my lifetime.”
During the press conference, Yeoh urged the parents of special needs or OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya) to register their children with the Welfare Department, in order to seek more allocation in the budget 2019.
She said the number of registered “OKU” in Malaysia is low with 480,000 only.
