BRUSSELS: A European Union court on Wednesday upheld sanctions imposed on Russian businessman Dmitry Arkadievich Mazepin, after he tried to appeal against the measures, reported German news agency (dpa).
Mazepin, who is the owner and boss of chemicals company Uralchem, had his assets in the EU frozen and is prohibited from entering or transiting through the bloc because of his ties to the Kremlin.
He is said to have attended a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin alongside other Russian executives in February 2022 at the early stages of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
For the EU, this shows that Mazepin “is a member of the closest circle of President Putin”, is a leading Russian business figure and supports Russia’s policies on Ukraine, a press release said.
The General Court rejected Mazepin’s challenge, arguing that the measures imposed on the businessman are well-founded and justified.
Mazepin can appeal against the decision before the EU’s highest court, the European Court of Justice. - Bernama, dpa
