Physical road tax slips discontinued from Feb 1 for M’sian cars

JPJ stops issuing printed road tax slips for Malaysian private vehicles as e-LKM system takes over Feb 1

MALAYSIAN private vehicle owners will no longer receive printed road tax slips starting February 1, 2026, as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) completes its transition to a fully digital system.

Pos Malaysia confirmed the change through its social media channels, marking the end of physical LKM (Lesen Kenderaan Motor) slips for Malaysian-owned private vehicles as the e-LKM system through the MyJPJ mobile application becomes the standard.

Understanding the Change

The printed LKM slips being discontinued are the physical paper documents that were introduced as an optional interim measure during JPJ’s transition to digital road tax.
Importantly, these physical slips were never required to be displayed on vehicles and were only provided for personal record-keeping during the transition period.

Law enforcement officers have been equipped with digital systems to verify road tax validity electronically, eliminating the need for physical proof.

Last Chance for Physical Copies

Vehicle owners who still prefer having a physical LKM slip can request one when renewing their road tax and insurance at Pos Malaysia post offices and kiosks nationwide—but only until the January 31, 2026 deadline.

Pos Malaysia has cautioned that availability is subject to stock, so those wanting a physical copy should act soon.

Who Is Affected?

A Ministry of Transport spokesperson has clarified the scope of this policy change:
Affected: Private vehicles owned by Malaysian citizens
Not Affected: Vehicles owned by non-Malaysians will continue to receive printed LKM slips from JPJ.

This distinction ensures that foreign vehicle owners who may not have access to or familiarity with the MyJPJ system can still obtain physical documentation.

How the Digital System Works

The e-LKM system operates through the MyJPJ mobile application, which allows vehicle owners to:
· Renew road tax digitally
· Store digital proof of valid road tax
· Access their vehicle information electronically
· Eliminate the need for physical documentation

Law enforcement officers can verify road tax status through their digital systems by checking vehicle registration numbers, making physical display or possession of road tax slips unnecessary.

Physical Driving Licenses Still Available

Interestingly, while JPJ is eliminating printed road tax slips, the ministry has taken a different approach with driving licenses.

In a recently announced policy, physical driving licenses are now available at JPJ counters or Urban Transformation Centres (UTC) nationwide without requiring proof of overseas travel—a reversal of previous requirements that restricted physical licenses to those who could demonstrate international travel needs.

This seemingly contradictory approach reflects the government’s attempt to balance digitalization efforts with practical considerations for different types of documents.

What Vehicle Owners Should Know
Starting February 1, 2026:
· No more printed LKM slips for Malaysian-owned private vehicles
· Digital e-LKM through MyJPJ becomes the only option
· No need to display any physical road tax documentation
· Law enforcement will verify digitally
Before February 1, 2026:
· Last opportunity to request printed slips at Pos Malaysia
· Subject to stock availability
· Available at post offices and kiosks nationwide
Not Affected:
· Non-Malaysian vehicle owners (can still get printed slips)
· Commercial vehicles (check with JPJ for specific policies)
Preparing for the Transition
Vehicle owners should ensure they have:
1. Downloaded the MyJPJ mobile application
2. Registered their account and linked their vehicles
3. Familiarized themselves with the digital renewal process
4. Verified their vehicle information is correctly displayed

Moving Forward

The discontinuation of printed road tax slips represents a significant step in Malaysia’s ongoing digital transformation of government services. While some vehicle owners may need time to adjust, the change eliminates paper waste and streamlines the verification process for both citizens and law enforcement.

As Malaysia continues to modernize its transportation documentation systems, vehicle owners are encouraged to embrace the digital alternatives that offer greater convenience, security, and environmental benefits.
