Parliament gets RM22 million security and tech upgrade

Parliament complex has completed a RM22 million upgrade, installing advanced CCTV and a backup chamber system to enhance security and ensure uninterrupted sittings.

KUALA LUMPUR: The security of the Parliament building has been enhanced with the installation of a modern, advanced closed-circuit television (CCTV) system.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the RM5.2 million project was completed within 12 months and covers the main block, multipurpose hall, official residences and the Parliament childcare centre.

“The main objective of this project is to enhance the security system of the Parliament building with world-class, state-of-the-art technology,” he said at a handover ceremony.

He said the system includes smart features with analytical functions, aligning with the government’s aspiration for responsive smart infrastructure.

A separate RM16.6 million project restored the conferencing systems in the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat over 16 months.

Nanta said this provides a live backup to ensure parliamentary sittings are not disrupted by a main system failure.

Despite the technological upgrades, conservation elements were maintained as the building is a National Heritage Site.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said the upgraded chamber now serves as a crucial support system.

He added the renovated space will host Youth Parliament sittings starting in May and provide a better venue for the previously cramped Special Chamber.
