England aim to fine-tune T20 World Cup plans in Sri Lanka series

England seek a series win in Sri Lanka to build momentum for the T20 World Cup, with Phil Salt highlighting their versatile middle order and spin depth.

ENGLAND will use their three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka as a final tune-up ahead of next month’s T20 World Cup.

The world number three side has won four of their last seven T20 series since a semi-final exit at the last World Cup.

Opening batter Phil Salt said carrying that momentum into the global tournament is the key objective.

“The key for us is a series win here,” Salt said.

“Any series win away from home is valuable and we are really looking forward to the first game.”

Salt, ranked second in the world, highlighted the team’s versatile middle order as a major strength.

“The middle order is never the easiest place to bat, but we have versatile guys with very high strike rates who can take the game away from the opposition,” he added.

England’s spin-bowling depth, which was pivotal in their recent ODI series win, is seen as another crucial asset.

“Having that variety is important because we know spin will play a big role in this part of the world,” Salt noted.

Sri Lanka have recalled explosive opener Kusal Perera, who provides a high strike rate and wicketkeeping cover.

Captain Dasun Shanaka said Perera’s experience and flexibility are vital for the team.

Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera also returns to bolster the Sri Lankan attack.

Shanaka played down concerns over leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who experienced cramping in the recent ODI series.

“Hasaranga was just having cramps, nothing serious,” the skipper said. – AFP
