A viral Threads post shows a foreigner begging at Gurun Selatan R&R, prompting netizens to highlight double standards and travel privileges.
BEGPACKERS have been a sore point for Malaysians in recent years, with many calling out tourists who exploit the kindness and generosity of locals.
Recently, a Malaysian alleged on Threads to spotting a foreigner begging at the Gurun Selatan Rest and Recreation (R&R) Area in Kedah.
“Some of them behave badly — they come to Malaysia but end up wandering around and begging to fund their travels.
“R&R areas are not places for begging,” the post claimed.

In an image attached to the post, a foreign man was seen sitting on the ground at the R&R stop, with two pieces of cardboard placed in front of him. Several RM5 notes could be seen beside the cardboard.
The incident has since been reported to the authorities.
The incident left netizens fuming, with many calling out what they described as double standards imposed on Malaysians when travelling overseas — particularly at Western countries — while others pointed out that such tourists allegedly beg primarily to finance their travels.
“Malaysians who go to Australia, England, or America get questioned, investigated, asked to show their bank accounts, and how much money they’re bringing in. But in Malaysia, it’s free and easy,” one user commented.
“They know this because some of our people will still give them money. They know they have a certain kind of privilege, so people automatically feel sorry for them,” another user added.
