Brazil demands X immediately stop its AI chatbot Grok from creating non-consensual sexualised images, threatening fines for non-compliance
BRASÍLIA: Brazilian authorities have ordered Elon Musk’s social media platform X to immediately block its AI chatbot, Grok, from generating sexually explicit deepfakes.
The directive from Brazil’s chief prosecutor, data protection agency, and consumer rights bureau targets non-consensual content involving children, adolescents, and adults.
The agencies gave X five days to implement measures preventing the creation of such material or face legal action and fines.
X claimed it had already deleted thousands of posts and suspended hundreds of accounts following a prior warning.
However, Brazilian authorities said checks revealed users could still generate sexualised deepfakes using Grok.
They criticised X for “not being transparent in its response” to the problem.
International pressure has been mounting on xAI to control Grok after its “Spicy Mode” feature enabled the creation of lewd images.
Simple text prompts like “put her in a bikini” could generate sexualised deepfakes of women and children.
According to the Center for Countering Digital Hate, Grok produced an estimated three million such images in just days.
Indonesia became the first country to block Grok entirely last month.
Britain and France have also pledged to maintain pressure on the platform over the issue.
X announced measures in mid-January to prevent Grok from undressing images of real people where illegal.
It remains unclear in which countries these measures are currently in effect.
