Malaysia and IMF discuss trade rebalancing and fiscal reforms

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met with IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva to discuss global trade rebalancing and Malaysia’s fiscal discipline.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met with International Monetary Fund managing director Kristalina Georgieva today to discuss key economic issues.

The bilateral meeting covered global trade rebalancing and strengthening the international financial safety net.

Discussions also focused on fiscal reforms under Malaysia’s MADANI Economy framework.

Anwar said the meeting further cemented the close relationship between Malaysia and the Bretton Woods institution.

“This relationship is based on periodic consultations, technical assistance and close policy collaboration,” he said in a statement.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to fiscal discipline and inclusive economic growth.

“Malaysia remains committed to fiscal discipline and economic growth that is inclusive and sustainable,” he said.

The country forecasts growth between 4.0% and 4.8% for 2025.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits hosted by Malaysia.

Also present were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour also attended the meeting.

The ASEAN Summit runs from October 26 to 28 in Kuala Lumpur. – Bernama
