A fresh graduate alleges they were asked to resign just weeks into probation, sparking debate over workers’ rights and HR practices in Malaysia.
A Malaysian fresh graduate was recently placed in a difficult situation at their workplace after discovering that their probation period had allegedly been cut short without proper notice.
Posted on Threads, the fresh graduate was supposed to work for three months as a probationary staff at the company.
However, it was alleged that they were told to resign after the company’s Human Resource Department terminated their contract after only one and a half months of working.
“After asking for feedback, they were told that their work performance was good but was slow,” read the post.
After much contemplation, the fresh graduate decided that the “best option” would be to try and negotiate with the company to complete the rest of their probation.
Netizens flooded the post with advice, mainly urging the fresh graduate not to give into the company’s alleged demands to resign and to compile as much evidence as they can to report the matter to the Labour Department.
“This is illegal in the eyes of the law. HR does not have the right to make any staff resign without their consent,” a user noted.
“Do not resign and request for the termination letter with the company letterhead which states the payments and other forms of compensation if it applies. This letter is important to claim for the Employment Insurance System,” advised another.
“They should have provided feedback before this to see if you can improve in your work. That’s what a probationary period is for,” said another.
