A sinkhole on Jalan Bagan Lalang is suspected to have been caused by underground water flow, with investigations focusing on a potential sewer pipe leak.
BUTTERWORTH: Underground water flow is suspected to be the cause of a sinkhole that opened on Jalan Bagan Lalang here.
Sungai Puyu state assemblyman Phee Syn Tze said Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) is conducting further investigations to confirm the exact cause.
The incident occurred at about 4.30 pm yesterday, creating a hole measuring two metres in diameter and 1.5 metres deep.

“IWK is still conducting investigations and suspects a possible underground pipe leak, as the location is along a sewer pipeline route belonging to IWK,” Phee told reporters after inspecting the site today.
Immediate action was taken by IWK’s contractor together with the Public Works Department to temporarily cover the hole.
Safety barriers and blinking lights were also installed around the affected area as a precautionary measure.
Phee said the incident also damaged a pipeline believed to be more than 70 years old.
She added that a similar incident had been reported at another location near the area several years ago.
Road users are reminded to be cautious and to slow down when passing through this route.
