Two Swedish citizens face terrorism charges for throwing hand grenades at Israel’s embassy in Copenhagen, with trial set for November.

COPENHAGEN: Denmark’s Prosecution Service has charged two Swedish citizens with terrorism for targeting the Israeli embassy with hand grenades last year.

Two explosions occurred near the embassy during the night of October 2, 2024.

Prosecutors stated the individuals, aged 18 and 20, transported five hand grenades to the embassy vicinity.

They threw two grenades toward the embassy, but the devices struck a nearby residential building and detonated.

“It is our assessment that the accused threw the hand grenades with the intent to target the Israeli embassy, and that the attack on the embassy under the given circumstances must be considered an act of terrorism,” prosecutor Lise-Lotte Nilas said.

The pair face charges of terrorism and attempted terrorism.

Authorities will seek prison sentences followed by expulsion from Denmark with re-entry bans.

A six-day trial has been scheduled between November 12 and February 3.

The Copenhagen attack occurred hours after shots were fired at Israel’s embassy in Stockholm.

Since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023, multiple incidents targeting Israeli interests have been reported in Sweden.

In February 2024, police discovered a grenade in the Israeli embassy compound, which the ambassador called an attempted attack.

Gunshots were fired outside the embassy in May 2024, prompting Sweden to enhance security around Israeli and Jewish institutions. – AFP
