Selangor SUKMA 2026 volunteer sign-ups surge past 30,000

Volunteer registrations for the 2026 Malaysia Games in Selangor have soared to 30,000, far exceeding the initial 5,000 target, with youth leading the charge.

SHAH ALAM: Volunteer registrations for the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor have surged to approximately 30,000, far surpassing the state’s initial target of 5,000.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari expressed particular pleasure that the majority of sign-ups are enthusiastic young people.

“Preparations for SUKMA are coming along smoothly, and what we are proud of, and find inspiring, is the participation of volunteers… especially the youngsters,” he said.

He added that organisers will try to involve as many volunteers as possible to ensure efficient and orderly Games operations.

Training for the volunteers will be held soon to prepare them for their roles.

Amirudin also stated that Selangor is more than 80% ready to host the Games, with the torch run scheduled to begin in May.

The RM40 million upgrading project for the Aquatics Centre is currently 30 to 40% complete.

It is expected to be fully ready by June, approximately two months before the Games commence on August 15.

During the same event, Amirudin highlighted a new semi-free education initiative for students at state-owned universities.

The initiative covers 50% of tuition fees for about 4,000 Selangor students at Universiti Selangor and Universiti Islam Selangor.

“This means that if their study cost is RM38,000 or RM35,000, they only need to pay RM15,000 to PTPTN,” he explained.
