US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expresses optimism for UN Security Council resolution on Gaza supporting international security force deployment
HAMILTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism Wednesday that the UN Security Council would finalize a resolution supporting an international security force for Gaza.
“We feel optimistic that it’s going to happen,” Rubio told reporters following G7 foreign ministers’ meetings in Canada.
He indicated significant progress on the resolution’s language and anticipated prompt Security Council action.
The United States is consulting various nations to balance interests beyond just the security force structure.
Washington circulated a draft resolution last week following the ceasefire championed by President Donald Trump.
Many countries require Security Council authorization before deploying troops to Gaza despite the Trump administration’s UN criticisms.
Rubio emphasized that international force deployment is crucial for increasing humanitarian assistance and sidelining Hamas.
“If you really want to see a huge uptick, not just in humanitarian assistance, but redevelopment, you’re going to need to have security,” he said. – AFP
