New pairing with Wooi Yik a chance to raise performance, says Wei Chong

National doubles player Man Wei Chong says pairing with 2022 world champion Wooi Yik is a great opportunity to learn and improve his game.

NATIONAL men’s doubles shuttler Man Wei Chong has described the coaching team’s decision to pair him with Soh Wooi Yik as the best opportunity to elevate his performance.

Wei Chong said Wooi Yik, who won the 2022 World Championships title with Aaron Chia, remained one of the world’s top men’s doubles players.

“He’s one of the best men’s doubles players in Malaysia and internationally, and his results speak for themselves.

“This is a great opportunity for me to learn from him. Wooi Yik also trusts me, so I need to give my best for him as well,” he told reporters after a training session here today.

Despite learning about the move at the last minute, Wei Chong said he respected the coaches’ decision to pair him with Wooi Yik and ready to embrace the new challenge in future competitions.

The 26-year-old also revealed that he resumed on-court training today after previously being hampered by three injuries to his right knee.

At the same time, Wei Chong said he would need to undergo additional training and improve communication with Wooi Yik ahead of next month’s Japan Open 2026 campaign from July 14 to 19.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) had recently announced a reshuffle in the national men’s doubles set-up.

Besides the Wei Chong-Wooi Yik pair, BAM has also introduced several new combinations involving national players for the subsequent tournaments, namely the China Open 2026 from July 21 to 26, the Taiwan Open 2026 from July 28 to Aug 2, and the Korea Open 2026 from Nov 3 to 8

These involved Aaron Chia teaming up with young player Aaron Tai, Tee Kai Wun will partner Yap Roy King and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi will form a partnership with Kang Khai Xing.
