Netizens debate whether parents controlling their children in their 20s shows love, protection or limits independence

PARENTS play a vital role in guiding their children towards the right path.

But is it normal for parents to continue controlling their children even when they are in their 20s?

That was the question raised by Threads user @lyyyshaaa.__, sparking a discussion online about parental influence and independence among young adults.

Many users said it is common for Malaysian parents to check on their children and have a say in certain aspects of their lives, even after they reach adulthood.

Hafizuddin said those who still have parents who care about them are truly fortunate, as orphans sometimes wish they had someone looking out for them.

Ishraf Latifah, 29, said there are both challenging and grateful moments when it comes to dealing with parents.

“Of course parents love their children. Even if they don’t ask, I’m usually the one who updates them first about everything. Just be grateful if you still have parents who care about you. Appreciate them while they are still around,” she said.

Nur Sha shared that her mother continued to look after and guide her until she passed away, explaining that her mother was simply overprotective because she did not want anything bad to happen to her children.

“Now she’s gone. I can go anywhere I want. For 33 years, whatever I did, I told my mum. No issue. Still happy, still alive,” she said.

Fatima, a divorcee, said her father has remained supportive and continues to guide her.

“The responsibility of a father takes over when a woman no longer has a husband’s support. He will always check on me and remind me. So I see it from the perspective of love and care,” she said.

However, not everyone agreed with the idea of constant parental control.

User @abgl07.99 argued that if parents continuously control their children and give them instructions, it may prevent them from developing independence, particularly in decision-making.

“Once the child is an adult, parents should let them think and decide for themselves, not teach them that everything must follow the parents’ instructions.

“If the parents suddenly pass away, what will happen to the child? Won’t they be unable to do anything? Because they’re already used to waiting for instructions before doing something. That’s not a good thing,” he said.
