A viral Threads post has sparked outrage and privacy concerns after a woman claimed a JPJ officer used her personal data to contact her on WhatsApp following a roadblock encounter.

A viral post on Threads has triggered a heated debate regarding data privacy and professionalism after a woman claimed she was contacted privately by a Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel who had stopped her at a roadblock.

The user, posting under the handle n.mstra__, questioned how the officer managed to obtain her personal mobile number following their brief professional encounter.

“May I know if JPJ can trace our phone number from our details? Yesterday, during a roadblock, he asked for my licence, but the MyJPJ app wouldn’t open, so he asked for my IC (identity card) number to check instead,” she wrote.

She described that the officer initially quipped that her licence had expired, but eventually allowed her to proceed after she clarified that it had already been renewed.

The situation took a concerning turn when she later received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number. Upon investigation, she claimed the sender was the same officer from the roadblock.

“When I got home, I received a WhatsApp from an unknown number… and yes, it was him. I was like, where is your professionalism? Where is your ethics, taking people’s data like this?” she added.

The post quickly gained significant traction online, amassing over 10,500 likes and nearly 1,000 comments, with the majority of netizens reacting strongly to the alleged misconduct.

Many social media users condemned the officer’s alleged behaviour, describing it as unprofessional, inappropriate and a form of harassment.

User faristalib_ responded succinctly: “Unethical. Report.”

“This is harassment… some men think everything is a joke. Very weird,” added anniq.cheezy.

khairilhazwan_hamzah expressed frustration over the integrity of certain enforcement officers, stating: “Integrity and responsibility are gone. Send me his phone number; I’ll report directly to JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy.”

kemalhariz urged the victim to take formal action, stressing: “This is creepy and not normal behaviour. Better report him before it becomes normalised.”

The discussion also revealed that this may not be an isolated incident. User umiesahad shared a similar experience: “A traffic personnel once told me, ‘If you don’t want a fine, give your phone number and we settle.’ These types exist everywhere.”

However, the sentiment was not entirely unanimous. User myyessim090522 offered a different perspective, suggesting: “Maybe he was just interested in you. If you’re not interested, just say it clearly.”
