Many educators say rude high achievers leave a worse impression than weaker students with respect and humility.

AS modern education discussions increasingly fixate on grades, rankings and academic pressure, educators online are raising the alarm that a more fundamental trait is quietly disappearing: basic manners.

A viral post on Threads by user @ayynabsz has gained significant traction after the teacher shared a blunt assessment of the qualities educators truly value in their students.

“To be honest, as a teacher, I respect students who are not academically strong but have good manners more than students who excel academically but are rude,” the user wrote, emphasising that “manners come first wherever you go.”

The sentiment resonated deeply with fellow teachers, parents and former students, many of whom argued that a student’s attitude often leaves a more lasting impression than their exam transcripts.

User @kancheongchic succinctly said, “Knowledge can be gained. Manners are learned.”

User @idhamwmahdi argued that knowledge devoid of manners is merely information, suggesting that the true value of education collapses when mutual respect is absent.

Teacher @hydrassssss shared that while educators are more than willing to guide struggling readers into becoming capable writers, they often reach a “breaking point” when dealing with disrespect. Even the most intelligent student, the user claimed, is seen as a “failure” if they lack respect for others.

Several social media users observed a recurring trend regarding how students behave after they leave the classroom.

Users @vixelated.89 and @shah_shahe noted that it is often the academically weaker students who remain the most appreciative, frequently greeting or visiting their former teachers years later. In contrast, they claimed some top-performing students tend to distance themselves once they have moved on.

Some pointed to a correlation between high performance and arrogance. User @safwinayassin observed that students who grasp lessons quickly sometimes interrupt their teachers, while @renjana_dea expressed concern that some children become overly prideful at a remarkably young age.

While the official narrative of education often revolves around performance metrics, the overwhelming response to @ayynabsz’s post suggests that those on the front lines of teaching measure success through a different lens.

In the eyes of many educators, a gracious tongue and gentle manners remain far more valuable than brilliance alone.
