Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Ethiopia visit includes business forum, MoU signings, and meetings with Ethiopian leaders to strengthen bilateral ties.

ADDIS ABABA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim began his second day in Ethiopia with a guided tour of the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum.

The museum commemorates Ethiopia’s historic 1896 battle victory and symbolizes African freedom and black empowerment.

Anwar then paid a courtesy call on Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie at the Addis International Convention Centre.

The Prime Minister also participated in the Malaysia-Ethiopia High Level Business Forum later that morning.

An evening welcoming ceremony at the National Palace featured a guard-of-honour inspection and “Tree of Friendship” planting.

The Prime Minister received a guided tour of the National Palace showcasing Ethiopian history and culture.

Anwar held a four-eye meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali at the palace.

Both leaders witnessed the exchange of memoranda of understanding on cooperation in health, air services, and tourism.

They also witnessed a collaboration document between Kuala Lumpur City Council and Addis Ababa City Administration.

“This will formalise the mechanism for maintaining strategic dialogue,” said an official statement.

The document sets the stage for long-term cooperation between Malaysia and Ethiopia.

Anwar and Abiy Ahmed held a joint press conference following their bilateral meeting.

The day concluded with an official dinner hosted by the Ethiopian Prime Minister.

This marks Anwar’s maiden visit to Ethiopia as Malaysia intensifies engagement with Africa.

His visit reciprocates Abiy Ahmed’s trip to Malaysia in October last year.

The three-day visit celebrates 60 years of diplomatic relations established in January 1965.

Ethiopia ranked as Malaysia’s 26th largest trading partner in Africa during 2023.

Anwar is accompanied by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

Also joining the delegation is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Zaliha Mustafa.

The Prime Minister will proceed to South Africa for the G20 Leaders’ Summit after Ethiopia.

He will then visit Kenya before returning to Malaysia. – Bernama
