A total of 53 JKR projects were categorised as sick in the first quarter of 2026, while the government says none were classified as abandoned.

PETALING JAYA: A total of 53 projects under the supervision of the Public Works Department (JKR) have been classified as sick projects as of the first quarter of 2026, representing 6.18% of all ongoing construction projects.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said, however, that no projects had been categorised as abandoned during the period.

He said 17 of the sick projects had their contracts terminated, with JKR now coordinating the appointment of replacement contractors to complete the remaining works.

“The government is unable to determine the exact amount of financial losses incurred as the assessment depends on various considerations and assumptions.

“However, delays have resulted in losses in terms of time and the benefits that should have been received by the public,” he said in a written parliamentary reply to Datin Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PN-Rantau Panjang), who asked about the number of sick and abandoned projects nationwide as of the first quarter of 2026, including the value of projects involved and the financial losses incurred by the government due to delays and contractors’ failure to complete projects according to schedule.

Nanta said all terminated projects were being managed in accordance with Treasury Circular PK 4.5 on the management of sick projects and the appointment of completion contractors.

“Claims for any additional expenditure incurred by the government are being handled in accordance with contractual provisions and existing government policies.

“These measures are being taken to ensure that the affected projects are completed in an orderly manner and can ultimately deliver their intended benefits to the people,” he added.
