Malaysia expects to announce results of talks with Thailand on fisheries and agriculture trade issues by month-end, says Mohamad Sabu.
PUTRAJAYA: The government is expected to announce by the end of this month the outcome of negotiations with Thailand on trade issues involving fisheries and agricultural products, including the ban on Malaysia’s shrimp exports to Thailand that has been in place since 2017.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the negotiations are now in the final stage following a visit by officials from Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture to Malaysia.
“We will also conduct inspections (there), and the negotiations are now in their final stage. This is the fastest time in which a resolution has been reached,” he told reporters after officiating the Global Animal Production and Veterinary Industry Summit (GAVIS) here today.
Mohamad said the outcome of the negotiations is expected to benefit both countries.
Last Thursday, in a statement issued following the first National Food Security Council Meeting for 2026, Mohamad said the government was working to resolve Thailand’s ban on Malaysian shrimp exports, which has been in place since 2017, as well as Malaysia’s pending application for market access for livestock products to Thailand, which has remained unresolved since 2024.
He said the meeting also discussed Thailand’s ban on shrimp imports into Malaysia, which took effect on June 1, as well as stricter inspections on Malaysian seabass exports to Thailand.
Meanwhile, in his speech, Mohamad said GAVIS 2026 brought together 108 presenters, including 51 international experts from countries such as China, Australia, the United Kingdom, Indonesia and Vietnam.
He said the summit provides a valuable platform for participants to exchange knowledge, foster innovation and strengthen collaboration in addressing shared challenges.
