Police will close and divert traffic on several main routes around the Minor Basilica of St. Anne from Saturday to Sunday for the St Anne’s Feast celebration.
BUKIT MERTAJAM: The police will close roads and divert traffic on several main routes in the area around the Minor Basilica of St. Anne here in stages from Saturday to Sunday (July 25 to 26) in conjunction with this year’s St. Anne’s Feast celebration to ensure smooth traffic flow and visitor safety.
Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief (SPT) ACP Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah said that the road closures and traffic diversion will begin at 9 am on Saturday and end at 2 pm the following day, and that the roads involved will be Jalan Kulim, from the front of the Caltex petrol station to the traffic light intersection at Taman Bukit Indah.
Road users from the direction of Kulim, Kedah heading to Bukit Mertajam can use alternative routes via Jalan Rozhan or Jalan Sepakat, then proceed to Jalan Muhibbah and Jalan Kampung Baru before exiting through Taman B.
“For road users from Bukit Mertajam heading to Kulim, they can take Jalan Kampung Baru to Jalan Berjaya, Jalan Song Ban Kheng, Jalan Kampung Baru towards Alma and Bukit Minyak. Alternatively, road users can also use Jalan Kampung Batu via Taman B and then to Bukit Indah before returning to Jalan Kulim,” he said in a statement today.
He said a candlelight procession, scheduled to take place from 7 pm to 11 pm on Saturday, will also involve phased road closures along Jalan Kampung Baru and Jalan Berjaya.
In this regard, Nik Aminuddin said his team advises road users passing through the area to plan their journeys earlier, use the alternative routes provided, and comply with the instructions of police officers and traffic personnel to avoid congestion.
He also urged the public to cooperate with the police and adhere to traffic regulations to ensure public safety, order, and smooth traffic throughout the celebration.
“All the roads that will be closed and experiencing traffic diversion will be reopened and will operate as usual starting at 2 pm on Sunday,” he added.
St. Anne’s Feast 2026 takes place at the Minor Basilica of St. Anne, Bukit Mertajam from July 17 to 26 and is one of the largest Catholic religious celebrations in the country, gathering thousands of devotees from both within and outside the country every year.
St. Anne’s Church was granted the status of Minor Basilica in 2019, thereby recognising its importance as an international Catholic worship site.
