Family dinner plans end in fatal Tanah Merah crash

Three killed after a lorry carrying chickens crashes into a parked trailer on the East-West Highway in Tanah Merah early this morning.

TANAH MERAH: Plans for a family dinner turned into a painful memory when Mohd Haikal Hanifah, who was unable to return home because of work, was killed in a crash involving a lorry and a trailer on the East-West Highway near Kampung Batu 7, Batang Merbau, here, early this morning.

His sister, Shazleen Hanifah, 32, said the family had organised a dinner last night to gather the siblings, but Mohd Haikal informed them that he could not attend due to work commitments.

“He told us he could not make it home because he had to collect a consignment of chickens in Kedah. He said that the trip would be his last before going on leave. We never expected that to be our final conversation,” she told reporters at the Tanah Merah Hospital’s Forensic Unit here today.

In the 4.15 am incident, Mohd Haikal, 29, was killed along with lorry driver Norazeman Abdul Aziz, 42, and another lorry attendant, Mohammad Zakwan Mohd Nor, 25.

Shazleen said Mohd Haikal, who had only been working as a lorry attendant for several days, previously worked at the Tanah Merah wholesale market and was very close to his seven siblings.

She said her brother’s body would be laid to rest at the Kampung Padang Kijang Muslim cemetery after the post-mortem.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Zakwan’s sister, Azwani Mohd Nor, 38, said her brother, who worked as an attendant and second driver, was accustomed to travelling to Kedah to collect chicken supplies for delivery to Tendong, Pasir Mas.

Azwani said Zakwan had also contacted the family a day before the incident and mentioned that the trip would be his final assignment before going on leave.

She added that her brother would be laid to rest at the Kampung Air Canang Muslim cemetery after the post-mortem.

For Norazeman’s wife, Norida Talib, 46, her husband’s passing was hard to accept as he had only resumed work on Friday after taking several months off due to gout.

She said her husband would be laid to rest at the Kampung Lawang Muslim cemetery.

The three men were killed after the five-tonne lorry transporting a load of chickens they were travelling in crashed into a trailer parked by the roadside along the East-West Highway here early this morning.
