Rain disrupts Sabah election campaigns in interior areas

Heavy rain and flooding in Sabah’s interior have forced candidates to change campaign schedules, with difficult road access and reduced visibility

KOTA KINABALU: Incessant rain throughout the week has disrupted campaign activities for candidates contesting the 17th Sabah state election, particularly in interior regions with challenging terrain.

Heavy evening downpours have affected areas with hilly roads, logging tracks, and temporary bridges, forcing last-minute changes to campaign schedules.

A Bernama survey found that slippery roads, rising river levels, and limited inland access have hampered movement in Pensiangan, Nabawan, Sook, Tulid, Tenom, and Kimanis.

Campaign convoys in Sook and Nabawan were postponed due to wet gravel roads that became impassable for vehicles.

The adverse weather has slowed campaign momentum and made it difficult for candidates to reach remote District Voting Centres accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles.

In highland areas like Kundasang and Tambunan, heavy rain combined with thick fog has reduced visibility and increased road slipperiness, complicating night travel.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, rain is expected to continue across several Sabah locations tomorrow morning.

Thunderstorms are forecast for most interior areas in the afternoon, with further rainfall anticipated at night across various locations.

Approximately 1.76 million voters are eligible to cast their ballots tomorrow across Sabah’s 73 state constituencies. – Bernama
