Veteran politicians including Pandikar Amin Mulia and Salleh Said Keruak defeated in Sabah state election as GRS wins 29 of 73 seats
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s fluid political landscape demonstrated that even seasoned politicians face voter rejection in state elections.
Several political veterans suffered defeats in their contested constituencies during the 17th Sabah State Election.
United Sabah National Organisation president Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia lost his second attempt to capture the Pintasan seat.
The former Dewan Rakyat Speaker contested under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah banner in an 11-cornered fight.
Pandikar, 70, failed to wrest the seat from the same opponent, Datuk Fairuz Rendan, who won as an Independent with a 1,070-vote majority.
In Usukan, former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak of Barisan Nasional lost his seat.
Warisan’s Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis@Fakharudy secured victory with a slim 442-vote majority in the six-cornered contest.
Salleh, 68, previously served as Communications and Multimedia Minister.
Parti Cinta Sabah president Tan Sri Anifah Aman suffered another defeat in his Bongawan bid.
The former Foreign Minister lost to the same opponent from the previous election, Dr Daud Yusof of Warisan, in a nine-cornered fight.
Gabungan Rakyat Sabah emerged as the largest coalition with 29 of the 73 contested seats.
Warisan secured 25 seats while Barisan Nasional won 6 seats in the election.
Independents captured 5 seats with smaller parties dividing the remaining constituencies.
United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation won 3 seats while Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku secured 2 seats.
Perikatan Nasional, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat and Pakatan Harapan each won one seat. – Bernama
