A UMK PhD student died after his car plunged into a lake at the Jeli campus; his passenger survived. Police are investigating the cause

KOTA BHARU: A Universiti Malaysia Kelantan doctoral student was killed and his friend injured after their car skidded and plunged into a lake at the UMK Jeli Campus.

Jeli district police chief Superintendent Kamarulzaman Harun said police received a distress call at 6.35pm, yesterday, and dispatched a team to the scene.

He stated the car was navigating a left bend on a downhill campus road when the driver lost control, causing it to plunge into a lake on the right side around 6.20pm.

“The passenger managed to exit the car and save himself, while the driver, a 25-year-old doctoral student, was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said in a statement.

Kamarulzaman added a post-mortem will be conducted at the Jeli Hospital Forensics Department, with the case investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

UMK identified the deceased as Muhammad Amidee Abdullah from Kampung Manal Jaya, Tanah Merah, a student at the Faculty of Bioengineering and Technology.

“UMK is providing assistance and full support to the family to help them through this difficult time,” the university said in a statement.

Police urged anyone with information to contact the Jeli district police headquarters Traffic Investigation Division at 09-9440222. – Bernama
