KOTA BHARU: The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) sergeant killed in a road collision in Machang was buried with full military honours on Thursday afternoon.
Sgt Fahmey Darus, 39, was laid to rest at the Nibong Muslim cemetery in Kampung Padang Kala, Melor at 3.30 pm.
His remains were taken from Machang Hospital to the Mukim Padang Kala Mosque for funeral prayers led by his 14-year-old son.
Fahmey’s sister, Haniza, 55, said her brother was scheduled to retire in April next year after more than 20 years of service.
“He had expressed his intention to work in electrical wiring after retirement and was in the process of completing his own house,” she told reporters.
She described him as the eighth of 10 siblings, survived by his wife and five children aged between three and 14.
The family was informed of his death by his wife, Nur Muzalifah Yahaya, 40, who also serves as a soldier in Pengkalan Chepa.
The fatal collision between an MAF truck and a car occurred at 6.35 pm on Wednesday.
Fahmey died at the scene, while three other MAF personnel sustained minor injuries and the car driver was seriously injured.
