Kuantan flood victims return home as waters recede, begin clean-up

Flood victims in Kuantan return to damaged homes for clean-up after waters recede, with authorities warning of debris and venomous animals.

KUANTAN: Flood victims took advantage of improved weather today to return home and begin clean-up operations.

The floods hit several areas in the district earlier this week.

Private sector worker Muhammad Adhar Tarmizi, 30, returned with five family members yesterday morning after nearly three days at a relief centre.

He said furniture was damaged and electrical appliances could not be tested due to a lack of power.

“We tried to save whatever we could, but the damaged furniture had to be thrown away,” he told Bernama at Taman Seri Damai.

Snack vendor Syafirudin Ismail, 27, said he made early preparations by storing merchandise and installing flood barriers.

“All my furniture is in good condition, and my merchandise was secured in advance,” he said at the PR1MA Sungai Karang housing area.

He noted this was the third flood in four months but far less severe than November’s event.

Pahang Civil Defence Force director Colonel Che Adam A Rahman said the number of victims is declining.

He advised returning residents to check carefully for flood debris, sharp objects, or venomous animals.

The force will continue operations and urged those in high-risk districts to evacuate early if river levels rise again.
