PN in trouble as Bersatu leaders resign after Muhyiddin steps down

Perikatan Nasional faces a crisis as key Bersatu leaders resign following Muhyiddin Yassin’s departure as chairman, raising questions about the coalition’s future.

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional is in turmoil following a wave of resignations from its top Bersatu leaders.

The crisis began with Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announcing his resignation as PN Chairman, effective Jan 1, 2026.

His departure triggered a chain reaction among other senior figures.

Bukit Kepong Assemblyman Sahruddin Jamal resigned as Johor PN Chairman, followed by Bersatu Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

Azmin stepped down from his roles as PN Secretary-General and Selangor PN Liaison Chairman.

Bersatu Vice President Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu then announced his resignation as Perak PN Chairman.

Negeri Sembilan Bersatu Chairman Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker also withdrew as Negeri Sembilan PN Chairman.

Taman Medan Assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin resigned as Selangor PN Secretary, following his chief Azmin.

The mass resignations are seen as a protest against the coalition’s partnership with PAS.

PAS Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed the party will submit names for the new PN Chairman position.

This issue is expected to be discussed at an upcoming PN Supreme Council meeting.

The collective action raises fundamental questions about the coalition’s continuity and survival.

Political analyst Dr Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri said the situation reflects a deep power struggle and crisis of confidence.

He described it as the “elephant in the room” that can no longer be ignored.

“The struggle for influence and differences in opinion between Bersatu and PAS have put both parties at a crossroads,” he said on Bernama Radio.

He questioned whether they can still find a compromise to save the coalition.

If no common ground is found, it could lead to a new political alignment in the country.

This may involve a unification of other opposition parties or an expansion of the current government bloc.
