A large object believed to be space debris has been found on a beach in Pekan, Pahang, and is now under police guard as authorities investigate.
PEKAN: A large object suspected to be debris from outer space has been discovered on the coast of Pahang.
Local residents found the object along the shoreline of Kampung Tanjung, Nenasi, last Tuesday afternoon.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Pekan district police chief Supt Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said initial investigations suggest the debris fell from space into the sea before being washed ashore.
“The debris is believed to have fallen from outer space into the sea and was later washed ashore by currents,” he stated.
The object measures 4.26 by 3.64 metres and is estimated to weigh several hundred kilogrammes.
Officers from the Malaysian Atomic Energy Department examined it and confirmed it is free of any radioactive material.
For safety, the barnacle-encrusted debris has been moved to the Nenasi Police Station for temporary storage.
Police lines have been placed around the object, which shows signs of surface damage and peeling.
Further investigations will be carried out by the relevant ministries.
