Penang State Assembly conveys condolences to Karpal's family

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang State Legislative Assembly today conveyed its condolences to the family of Bukit Gelugor member of parliament, Karpal Singh (pix), who died in a road accident early today.
Assembly Speaker Law Choo Kiang said the late veteran politician had fought for democracy in Malaysia and his demise was surely felt by all.
"The late Karpal Singh had been a Penang state assemblyman in the 1970s and I believe his contributions in the political arena will be remembered forever," he said when contacted, here, today.
Karpal, the former DAP chairman, 74, and his personal assistant Michael Cornelius, in his 40s, were killed when the Toyota Alphard MPV they were travelling in was involved in an accident with a lorry at Km306.1 of the North-South Expressway, near Gua Tempurong, Kampar, Perak.
Pakatan Rakyat leaders in Penang also expressed their condolences and sadness over the passing of Karpal, dubbed the "Tiger of Jelutong".
State DAP chairman, Chow Kon Yeow said the veteran politician was respected by friends and foes for his contributions in the legal sphere and in upholding the Malaysian constitution.
"His demise is a great loss to DAP and the people. We are saddened by his death and we hope his family will be strong in facing their loss," he said.
Penang Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chief, Datuk Dr Mansor Othman said the news of Karpal's death in a road accident today came as a shock and it was not just a great loss to the opposition pact but also to the legal fraternity and Malaysian politics.
"On behalf of Penang PKR, I would like to express our deepest condolences to his family. His death is a huge loss to us as he had contributed so much," he added. – Bernama
