Illegal hill clearing in Bukit Kukus

GEORGE TOWN: Residents near an alleged illegal hill clearing in Bukit Kukus, Paya Terubong, are unaware of any such activities taking place near their homes.
Housewife Lim Cheng Sim, 43, said she did not know what was happening as the area was deep in the hills. She said she had stayed in the area for more than 10 years and this was the first time she was hearing of such a thing.
"I hope the state government takes action to preserve these green lungs in line with the tagline of a cleaner, greener, safer and healthier Penang," she added when met by theSun today.
The issue was brought to light after Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu highlighted the matter on Sunday.
He called for action to be taken and urged that another Bukit Relau incident, where a developer had cleared the hill without permission, be avoided.
Meanwhile, a barber who only wanted to be identified as Anbagalan, 49, said he too did not know what was happening.
He said he only found out after reading the papers on Monday and urged the authorities to take action.
"Preserve the hills for the future generations," he said.
